What is the meaning of education? If we look back in time, being educated meant to be enlightened with a strong set of social skills and knowledge that allowed you to put forward your ideas. All the famous philosophers, sociologists and thinkers have given us knowledge. Knowledge that contained reasoning, belief, character and expectations, was a primary source of social debate and development. This sort of development was crucial to the forming of modern societies and welfare states.
Now let us come to the modern day era. Education is directly connected to having a carrier. This has resulted in a huge loss of will and initiative that people are willing to take for such debates. Nowadays, we are only fed with information and numbers. The information that only restricts us in a limited paradigm of thought which has only taught us to engineer our surrounding that fit our needs.
Partly to be blamed for this is the fast paced lifestyle and economies that we have to encounter. No university education means no good job and subsequently an ‘improper’ lifestyle. This is one reason that ethics and moral are the last subjects that we would like to discuss or think. We are pushed to follow the majority rather than the brain we have in our head. In doing so, we completely ignore a historical sociological fact that the decision about right and wrong can never be made on numbers. This is in stark connection to what I predicted in my previous blog post that we are heading towards a direction where we will have to chose rather than decide on the basis of our own knowledge.

I think that the past educates us, and we educate the future. Everything have to start somewhere, so that it later can be developed in the further by using the right knowledge.
ReplyDeleteI think that we have advantage of all that we have read and learned today, and I also believe that we will teach our future generation a lot. For each day that passes, you learn something new, so I would not exactly say that we have been fed with information and numbers.
Many people are extremely ambitious and really talented, they come up with new innovations even today, that the future will find useful. The Past educates us – and we educate the future.
I find your way of thinking very interesting, with very good arguments and details :)
The meaning of education has surely changed in the last decades. The society of today is fast paced and we can gain access to information a lot easier so I think that’s why the education has taken a shift towards this path. Just as you say that without an education you are in a bad situation of not getting a job as others with an education will have higher priority. I agree with that the society wants us to follow the majority like if we were sheeps. The only reason for this should be that it is easier for them to divide us into groups where they can influence us the most. The world is in constant change so the question would be how what part of our life will education have in 50 to 100 years, will we need an education or will the Internet provide us with the information necessary? I surely do not know.
